Fruška gora – Magical Mountain

Fruška Gora is a beautiful mountain located in the heart of plains of Vojvodina and its beauty captivates all who visit. Fruška Gora is an island mountain in Srem. The largest part of mountain is in Serbia, while a small portion goes to Eastern Croatia. It extends over a length of about 75km, and a width of 12 to 15km.

Fruška Gora was declared as national park at 1960. and it was the first national park in Serbia. The highest peak is Crveni Čot (539m) and other important peaks are Stražilovo (321m), Iriški venac (451m) and Veliki Gradac (471m).

The valleys of Fruška Gora are covered with meadows, pastures and cornfields; on the slopes are orchards and vineyards of the famous vine cellars and the parts greater than 300 m are covered with dense deciduous forest, where is the largest concentration of lime trees in Europe. Around 700 species of medicinal plants growing on the mountain as well as many animal species.

Monuments of Culture – 17 monasteries of the Serbian Orthodox Church, spread out across the mountain, were raised as endowments of the Serbian royal family, after which, in the late Middle Ages, under the pressure of the Turks, the center of Serbian spiritual and cultural heritage, moved to the north. Monasteries at Fruška Gora , well-known as Serbian mount Athos, are: Beočin, Bešenovo, Vrdnik, Velika Remeta, Grgeteg, Đipša, Jazak, Krušedol, Kuveždin, Mala Remeta, Novo Hopovo, Petkovica, Privina glava, Rakovac, Staro Hopovo, Fenek I Šišatovac.

In monasteries were staying Vuk Stefanovic Karadzić, Dositej Obradović, Filip Višnjić, Karadjordje and many others famous persons from Serbian history. Apart from monasteries, other cultural monuments are remains of Roman Acumincum in Stari Slankamen, Vrdnik and Ledinci towers, castles in Čortanovci and Beočin, monument on Iriški Venac, etc.

Fruška Gora was the inspiration for many great poetry such as: Branko Radičević, Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj, Milica Stojadinović and many others. On the mountain there are several fortress, among them the Petrovaradin fortress and tower Vrdnička built in Roman times and is now in ruins.  Apart from monasteries, other cultural monuments are remains of Roman Acumincum in Stari Slankamen, Vrdnik and Ledinci towers, castles in Čortanovci and Beočin, monument on Iriški Venac, etc.

It is a popular resort, visited by hundreds of people every year (most interesting are Iriški Venac, Stražilovo, Zmajevac, Popovica, Letenka), and it is a mountain whose beauty enchants all visitors.
